So, recently I have been wondering if there is a way to combine my love of graphic design with my love for the writing community. I came up with the idea of the Craptastic Cover Contest. There details are here but the basic idea is once a month or so, I’ll design a mock-up cover for one writer’s work-in-progress manuscript.

I asked my BFF, Riki Cleveland, if she would be my first victim…I mean winner, so I can demonstrate how the process will work. First, I asked Riki about her current manuscript. Her WIP is a steamy category romance with the working title BORDERLINE. In it, a smokin’ hot Border Patrol agent falls for a tourist whose family threatens to expose his mother’s immigration status.
You can see the Craptastic Cover I came up with above. Thankfully, she liked it and the art is now hers to use as a NanoWriMo icon or on social media or however she would like. I used two photos I licensed from Depositphotos and a typeface from the library I own, making the design all good on the copyright front.
